Great Crap! A Turtle!

One of the things about living close to the Shenendoah River is that sometimes you see Box Turtles. This one showed up in my front yard (Click on any image to enlarge): I decided to name him Turtle X-Treme!, the ultimate name for the most insane, out of control Turtle ever. The italics and exlamation point are part of the correct spelling. If you are speaking and Turtle X-Treme! comes up in the course of the conversation you have to shout the name to let people know that you are spelling it correctly.
I was a little worried about Turtle X-Treme! because he seemed to be tring to move his back legs but couldn't get anywhere. I thought maybe he was stuck in the miry muck of my horrible, horrible front yard. I would throw down some weed killer and grass seed, bt I rent this property and just am not motivated to take care of the landlord's yard for him. This was how the yard looked when I moved in, and this is how the yard is going to look when the landlord gets it back. If I do any improvements at all, it will be to set the front lawn on fire.
Anyway, I tried poking Turtle X-Treme! with a stick to help it get some traction and get out of the mud. However, this is what I found instead:
He's not kicking his legs to get out of the mud. He's digging a hole!

Eastern Box Turtles lay their eggs between the months of June and July. They look for sunny places like my front yard and dig out a cavity where they will deposit their eggs, usually under the cover of night. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EASTERN BOX TURTLES

Turtle X-Treme!'s gonna be a mamma! Way to go!

Hooray Steak! You're a friend of terrapins too! Your backyard adventures make me proud. Let me know when you, like mighty Glorfindel, set the grasslands afire.

I'll watch from my backyard.

the proper term when discussing the procreation of box turtles is not "mamma!" . . .

it's mammy! . . . .

steak, as much as you detest authoritarianism, you must begin to really drop the hammer on the fact check department. . . they are growing way too lax over there. your 'catch more flies with honey' attitude has made them down right lazy.

mamma. . . please . .
