It's a computer image of what the Earth would look like if it were Flat and viewed from afar. (Click on image to enlarge.) I found it while cruising around on the interwebs to look for more interesting urban legends to talk about. It came from the utterly delightful Flat Earth Society Forum. I'm so impressed with this page that I've added it to my special list for "Important Links" where it will remain in perpetuity between the Barry Manilow store and the Oingo Boingo fansite.
I was considering posting another installment to my "Springtime for Mythbuster" series, but the guys at the Flat Earth Society are just too good. Their FAQ section anticipated all of my tough questions:
Q: "Why do you guys believe the Earth is flat?"
A: Well, it looks that way up close.
And
Q: "Why do the all the world Governments say the Earth is round?"
A: It's a conspiracy.
If you want someone to debunk the popular misconception that the Earth is Flat, you'll have to look someplace else. I am far too impressed with these scrappy fighters, so willing to expend brain cells and bandwidth to champion the cause of a Flat Earth, that I just can't bring myself to mount an argument against them. I can only marvel at their dedication and possible severe brain trauma.
The Flat Earther's model for earth's disc-shape with the north Pole as the center and Antarctica as a ring around the circumference may look familiar to you: it's the same layout for the continents that appears on the UN logo. Does this mean that the original purpose of the UN was to advance the Flat Earth agenda? Some Flat Earthers think so!Unfortunately, that would mean that the UN has failed miserably in its charter mission. For I don't know of any one that the UN has persuaded to believe the World is Flat. Even worse, there are so many questions that remain to be answered. Such as:
- Do people on the beaches of California realize that, with a powerful enough telescope, they could have a clear, unimpeded view of Australia?
- Why haven't sailors told anyone about how it takes much longer to sail between two latitudinal degrees south of the equator than it does to sail between degrees on the opposite parallel north of the equator?
- Why haven't you noticed by now that the sun is a disk that hooks away to the right instead of setting behind the western horizon?
I don't have these answers. And my brief but enjoyable time spent with the Flat Earth Forums leads me to believe that they don't either. If you can solve these riddles, be sure to sign up on the forum and share your wisdom with the world!

Well . . . . when was the last time you took a direct flight from Sydney Australia to Port Elizabeth South Africa? Everyone knows it's a 27 day flight . . . geez. Get your facts strait roundy!
Hello there zero Steak always has his facts right
well researched look up his wisdom
Actually, it would be 27 hours at worst. Not days. Someone has either badly missinformed you, or the pilot you had was demented enough to go VFR. You get your facts straight flat face (nothing personal, just the quickest name I could think of).
was looking at one of the flat earth society sites. Their conception of many things is severely confused. In one paragraph, they say that if the earth was round that gravity would pull them off the earth. There are two things wrong with this. one, the definition of gravity does not say it pulls "down". it says it pulls towards the center of an object. the second problem is that if gravity did pull "down" wouldn't that mean the earth itself is falling?
